Sometimes it is just hard. I am not going to lie. As parents, we can sometimes feel like we aren’t doing enough or that we are failing.
Sometimes it is just hard. I am not going to lie. As parents, we can sometimes feel like we aren’t doing enough or that we are failing. Especially now when many of us have been thrust into a new way of being and living that we weren’t quite ready for. Being home with our children can be hard. Especially right now. There is so much uncertainty , anxiousness and maybe even fear. I am here to tell you that you have every right to feel whatever you are feeling. This is not a circumstance of our choosing. You aren’t expected to have it all figured out or together. But what we can do is take each day, one at a time. So what I want us all to do is be gentle with our children and ourselves. Be kind and thoughtful. Let’s be intentional in what we do. And one of the ways we can start is by thinking of this as an opportunity to reset . This could be a time to connect….even in the midst of social distancing. So try to go slow and not try to do it all in one day. As they say Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither will your homeschool… be it temporary or something you continue even once things are back to normal.

A few things that you can do is create a rhythm to your days. A rhythm is different than a schedule. A rhythm is a way you all ebb and flow thru the day. A simple rhythm can be wake up, slow breakfast together , morning chores where the children make their beds and tidy up . Then, transition into an activity. If you have school age kids who have work from their schools, have them do that for up to an hour , then do a “breathing out” activitiy to exert some energy. Make time for free time where they can just be. This could be exploring art ..something so many children dont get to do anymore in school. Set out paints, let them draw, doodle . Even my high schoolers love having time to do this…its not just for my littles. Then , go back to some focused school work. Stop and have lunch together. Then, take naps or a quiet rest…because everyone can use a nap or quiet. This gives you time to do the same if you need. Then, do a bit more work and continue in this rhythm . Whatever you find works for you all. No pressure. If you can go outside for a bit…do so. The most important thing is to have a rhythm because it takes the anxiety away. You don’t have to fill the time and over schedule. I will share more on what we do in the hive to give your inspiration as we go along. But, hang in there. We got this!
